OPERATING COSTSThe following table summarizes operational cost for LongEZ N961EZ over the last 8 years. I've reviewed my log books, receipts and a little bit of educated guess to come up with these numbers.This chart does not include the initial cost of the plane, nor are upgrade components included, i.e. adding autopilot, electronic ignition, or a second comm radio. Probably the only item that could fall into either category (new vs operation) is the propeller.The Airplane was New with the Great American propeller. A Prince prop was added after several hindered hours as an upgrade. Unfortunately, the prop was destroyed by an exhaust valve that went thru it. (this event also initiated the major overhaul of the engine)An IVO prop was purchased after this, but was removed, and purchase price refunded following blade clamping issues that could not be resolved.The MT prop was purchased at this time.The Great American has always served as my backup prop, and was sent off to get it overhauled.
The intent of the "Per Hour" column is not to make efficiency comparisons between fuels or oils, but to come up with a true "how much has each hour of operation cost, and what contributed to these costs.This is all of my costs ($94,000) divided by my total hours (2600), So , The average hourly cost of owning and operating my airplane has been $36.18 per hour.During this 2600 hours, I burned 5723 gallons of 100LL, This fuel cost $13,500. So, Averaged out over the 2600 hours, I spent $5.17 per hour on 100LL.During this same 2600 hours, I burned almost 3 times that amount in car gas that cost $18,000, The Car gas cost averages out to $6.91 per hour of the total cost. The reason the Per hour cost is higher, is because I burned almost three times the amount, OVER THE 2600 HOUR PERIOD.You may also see the same thing for Oil. Over the 2600 hour flying period, Aeroshell cost 0.14 vs the 0.17 for Castrol GTX 20x50. The same reason applies here. You'll see that I only used 169 quarts of the Aeroshell, but 394 quarts of the Castrol.It would be fairly easy to compute the actual cost differential between burning 100LL vs Car gas, with the data I provide.Assuming for this calculation that car fuel and 100LL have the same energy content. I burned a total of 20,095 gallons of fuel for 2600 hours.If I had purchased ONLY 100LL, the total cost would be $47,223, or $18.16 per hour.If I had purchased ONLY Auto, the total cost would be $25,118, or $9.60 per hour.I hope this helps in clarifying this.WaiterWaiters GPS Set Time program.
