STRAKE TOP

LongEZ Strake 220 I had no leaks using the plans method. This is the only time that one should NOT be concerned about weight, lay it on thick and heavy. WET WET WET.

This method was described in one of the CPs to eliminate the chance of leaks around the top of the strake.

Cover the fuel screen and vent tubes so they don’t accidentally get covered with flox or foam residue while this work is performed

1) Test fit the top as per plans, prep the strake bulkheads for a ¼ inch inside flox corner where they will meet the top. Remove foam from the inside of the bulkheads. All the way down to the inside layers of the glass.

2) Sand the upper surfaces where the FLOX V will adhere to on the outer surfaces of the bulkheads and the forward surface of the centerspar.

3) Layup 2 layers of BID, Peel ply both sides. When cured cut these into ½ wide strips, as long as you can (24 inches).

4) Using a small dab of superglue and spray accelerator, mount the strips on the bulkheads to form the FLOX V. Mount a strip along the front of the centerspar also.

5) On the underside of the top, lay down duct tape in the areas that are going to contact the FLOX V. The Duct tape will prevent the top from sticking to the FLOX.

6) Use a lot of FLOX and pile into the V that is formed by the ½ strips. Don’t get skimpy

7) Gently place the strake top into position and weigh it down. Let the flox cure.

8) After cure, pop the strake top off. Inspect the FLOX V for any voids.

9) Sand the top surface of the FLOX V where it will contact the strake top.

10) Remove the duct tape from the underside of the strake top and verify that it is ready to bond.

11) Vacuum out the strake and verify the vent and fuel screen are clear.

12) Lay on a small pile of flox all the way around the FLOX V. If there were any voids, lay on enough to fill these voids.

13) Paint a thin layer of wet flox to the underside of the top that will contact the FLOX V.

14) Gently Place the strake top back into position and weigh it down until the flox cures

15) When cured, guarantee, no leaks from the top.
