23 November 2008 ELECTRICAL - ALMOST COMPLETE

Wired Fuel Flow sensor. The sensor I'm using is a Floscan 231. This sensor looks identical to the one used by aviation. The Floscan 231 is used in the Boating/marine industry. This model can handle flow rates up to a 70 GPH and costs about $110 (Direct from Floscan 231). I got mine off of E-Bay, but I've seen them advertised at marinas. The Floscan 231 is now wire to the Dynon EMS EMS 10.

Rerouted some of the wiring on the firewall to clean up.

A quick review of the diagrams. I have two wires that remain to be connected, The ALTERNATOR light and the CARB TEMP sensor.

16 November 2008 Oil Dipstick

One of the challanges of Downdraft cooling was the air intake on the left side went right through the Oil Dipstick Tube.

Not any more. Phillip Camarda had a novel idea that solved this problem. Basically, he machined the bottom, top, and dip stick cover. The bottom and top are connected by standard automotive 1 inch hose, of any length. The top screw on cover is similiar to the original, but with one very major difference: Instead of a rod as the actual dip stick, it uses a flexible cable. I still need to "Calibrate" the cable. I'll use a metalic number stamp to stamp "4", "6" and "8" into the plastic cable cover at the correct locations.



15 November 2008 Electrical Ignition hookup

LongEZ P-Mag 1 Verified the Left and Right ignition systems. The "MAG" switches were reversed, so I needed to correct that. The "P-Lead" switch for the left mag was also installed upside down, so that is now corrected.

The Left system is a P-Mag.. Its powered by a small Lead acid battery in the nose. The Right ignition is a Jeff Rose system, Its powered off the main electrical system.



8 November 2008 Fuel Flow Transmitter

Several months ago, I installed the Fuel Flow transmitter on the Fuel Servo bracket on the engine. After thinking about this, I decided to move the transmitter off the engine and install it on the firewall.

I was originally going to place the transmitter just before the Fuel filter, but I had a difficult time getting the tube angles correct and also being able to secure the transmitter to the firewall (the pump assemble is on the passanger side of the firewall, and its difficult to get bolts or nuts in this location)



8 November 2008 Prop Extension Bolts

My original prop extension bolts were nothing more than standard AN7 bolts that were 1 3/4" long.

LongEZ Prop Bolts 1     I originally used these bolts (Standard AN7 with the heads drilled for Safety Wire) because there just wasn't an inexpensive alternative. This configuration has over 2600 hours on it,

Using AN7 bolts requires a great deal of care to ensure the bolt is really tightening against the Prop extension and not bottoming out inside the the hub insert. To do this, I would run a bolt all the way into the hub insert until it bottomed out. I would then look at the front of the hub and count the exposed threads up inside the hub. After installing the Propellor extension and bolts, I would then count the threads to make sure I didn't bottom out the bolts.

The Bolts that Saber Propellor sells solve this problem. The grip length is shorter and the threads are longer. This ensures that the bolts will NOT bottom out in the hub.

Saber sells Entension bolts for about $7 each (pack of six) and prop bolts from $10 - $15 each (pack of six) depending on length. Don't forget that they also sell prop extensions.
